We are practicing urban geology at this stop. After weaving our way through Miami city traffic, we’re examining the Miami Limestone there are also pieces of Key Largo Limestone used for wall construction. Along the Coral Gable Watereay, underneath the Le Juene street bridge, is an excellent exposure of the Miami Limestone. Here it is full of ooids, displays burrowing, and exhibits great cross bedding exposed in three dimensions.
Our first Everglades stop. Boulders of the Tamiami limestone have been dredged up and pilled along this waterway for erosion prevention. Also an opportunity for part one of our regional Everglades overview, and our first alligator sighting.

A completely full campground awaited us at Oscar Scherer State Park last night, so our campsites are spread around the tent loop. Lots of soft white sand though made for a pleasant night’s sleep.
Today is our time moving camp for awhile. We’ll end up in Key Largo where we’ll spend the next four nights
We keep hearing about Ana, but we hope not to meet her.
At the beach on Venice, FL we are searching the coarse sediments in the surf zone for more Miocene shark teeth and other invertebrate remains. Here they are eroding out of a shale formation just off-shore. It’s also a chance to end the day with a sunset swim.
