We begin our first day of snorkeling waiting for the gate to Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park to open. A great time for a safety review, picking dive buddies, and a discussion of reef ecosystems. 

  

The trail here leads to an overlook platform that gives a view of the typical Everglades. Also get to see some great views of karst surfaces. 

   
 

We’ve stopped at the Royal Palm Visitor Center in the Everglades to hike the Anhinga Trail. A chance to checkout a wide variety of Everglades fauna and flora. 

   
       

We are practicing urban geology at this stop. After weaving our way through Miami city traffic, we’re examining the Miami Limestone there are also pieces of Key Largo Limestone used for wall construction. Along the Coral Gable Watereay, underneath the Le Juene street bridge, is an excellent exposure of the Miami Limestone. Here it is full of ooids, displays burrowing, and exhibits great cross bedding exposed in three dimensions.
