South Gate Hill

Our first geologic stop of the trip! We reviewed the regional geology of the area to set the context for today, and then we spent some time examining the early Ordovician limestones and shales outcropping here.  The rocks are very fossiliferous, with excellent examples of brachipods, echinoderms, corals, trilobites, etc.

EARTH 2015 Florida Field Trip — Welcome!

After gathering everyone together bright and early at C.C. Little on this beautiful morning, we are now underway.  Our caravan is headed south, to Clifty Falls State Park, near Madison, IN.  Along the way we will be looking at several Paleozoic sequences in Indiana. And, by the time we arrive at camp this evening, I expect the early buds and blossoms we’re enjoying in Ann Arbor will be replaced by fully leafed-out trees, and Spring will be over with in less than a day.
